  Contacted David to complete some emergency repairs to roof (boarding up old velux window opening and sorting out a leak). David quoted £1500 as the whole rear slope would need redoing apparently (a small mid terrace!). Over the next week David kept saying more things needed doing and costs spiralled to £5040. David did not provide a written contract or give a breakdown of these costs. Without our permission David stripped the tiles off the left hand side of our rear extension claiming that this all needed doing. He also said the front slope of the property needed redoing which he could do for only £1000 more. When I challenged David about the spiralling and unrealistic costs he did not do any more work on the roof for a couple of days leaving it exposed to the elements. I sent David an email referring to my rights under the contract regulations and consumer rights acts and made reference to the trading standards. David immediately replied saying he would complete the work for the originally agreed £1500. David repeatedly told me he wasnt a cowboy builder but draw your own conclusion. To Davids credit he completed the work in a couple of days. I cannot comment on the quality of it as I am not a tradesman, I guess time will tell. I would not recommend asking David to do any work unless you have a good knowledge of what price you should be paying, know your legal rights and dont mind a builder trying to rip you off.
